Classical Guitar Qualification
Flexible, Progressive & Internationally Oriented Guitar Qualifications

The Musicea Arts and Culture Council Classical Guitar syllabus provides a flexible and progressive pathway of graded exams, from Foundation I to Grade 8, for guitarists of every level and ability. The Musicea qualification enables candidates to demonstrate their musical and technical skills in a way that suits their individual learning needs, interests and musical development.
Developed with a focus on 21st-century music education, the syllabus combines structured progression with flexibility. It encourages candidates to explore a broad range of classical guitar repertoire while building sound technical and musical foundations.
Flexible Repertoire for Every Candidate
Musicea's prescribed repertoire is optional. It sets an appropriate standard and benchmark for each grade.
Candidates may select repertoire that reflects their own preferences and interests from one or more standard publications of their choice, provided that the selected works meet the technical and musical level of the grade.
The repertoire recommendations identify well-known and readily available publishers and publications, including both printed books and digital resources. This gives learners greater choice while maintaining a clear standard for each grade.
Diverse Musical Styles & Global Perspectives
The Musicea Classical Guitar syllabus offers a wide-ranging selection of musical styles and genres, encouraging candidates to discover music from different cultures, traditions, periods and composers. The syllabus seeks to balance:
- International techniques
- Standard practices
- Musical diversity
- Cultural enrichment
By studying music from different historical periods and composers, candidates develop broader musical understanding, stylistic awareness and an appreciation of the diverse traditions that shape the guitar repertoire.
A Learner-Centred Approach to Classical Guitar Grades
The Musicea qualification framework recognises that every learner develops differently. Rather than restricting candidates to a single prescribed repertoire list, Musicea provides a structured benchmark while allowing candidates to make meaningful repertoire choices.
This creates a learner-centred approach to classical guitar education, while retaining the progressive standards expected of a graded qualification.
Physical & Online Classical Guitar Examinations
The Musicea Arts and Culture Council offers both physical and online examinations for Classical Guitar, giving candidates flexible options for assessment.
Candidates, teachers and institutions can refer to the Musicea Examination Guidelines for detailed information on examination requirements, repertoire, technical expectations, assessment and examination procedures. Fees are listed in the Examination Fees schedule, and answers to common questions are on the FAQ page.
